Camp NANOWRIMO April 2013
It’s almost time for Camp NANOWRIMO!
I’m super excited to find out who my “cabin-mates” will be!
If you’re looking at the screen with an awkward expression… let me explain.
Camp NANOWRIMO is FREE adventure for writers, artists, graphic designers, etc. It’s an imaginary place where people across the world gather together (over the internet) to encourage one another on a personal goal. This Camp is from April 1st through April 30th, so make sure to register now!
Here are the steps:
1.) Go to this website: Camp NANOWRIMO and sign up!
2.) Upload a pic of yourself, and information you feel comfortable allowing others to see.
3.) Choose your goal. ANY GOAL. Mine is to write 30,000 words in the month of April. A few more examples would be: Create a book cover every day in April, Write a blog post every day in April. (Something that challenges you, if it’s your first time and you don’t feel comfortable with one a day, try one every other day.)
4.) Go to the “Community” tab and click the first link “Cabin Settings.” This is where you choose who is in your “Cabin.” (Your personal group of encouraging buddies) Choose one of the following options:
- I don’t want to be included in a cabin.
- Surprise me with random cabin mates!
- I’m looking for campers that match specific criteria.
5.) If you are going to write a novel, go to the “Camper Profile” tab and click the second link, “My Novels.” This is where you input your book-to-be’s information.
6.) Check out the forums for ways to stay on task, ideas to get you in the mood to write, just to chat or for assistance with your goal! Click Here: Forum Link
7.) Let everyone know what you are doing!! Go to the “Camper Profile” tab and click the fourth link, “Badges.” This has pictures you can copy and paste onto your website or Facebook pages!
8.) Send me a message if you want some encouragement along the way! Let me know what your goal is! My camper name is: Kyelena2. You can search for your friends by their camper names and send e-mails back and forth! Go to the “Camper Messages” tab and click the fourth link “Message A Camper” when the message opens begin typing their user name, and tadaa they should appear! (Just like magic!)
Camp NANOWRIMO is done two times a year. I’m sure you are wondering what NANOWRIMO stands for… I was!
NA- national, NO- novel, WRI- writing, MO- month
(National Novel Writing Month).
I started last November with NANOWRIMO, which is held in the month of November. In November the overall goal of writers is to write 50,000 words! If that isn’t your goal, you are labeled a “NANO REBEL” which just sounds like fun to me. (Believe me, there are a ton of rebels running around in there)
Of course you can do fun things with the members of your “Cabin” as well. Some ideas:
- My son and I are going to pitch a tent in my bedroom for me to write in, and him to read in. J
- There is a site that created achievable award badges which are downloadable photos! Here is the site: Achievement Badges!
- Skype, Google Hangouts, and web camming sites are also available to see each other virtually and allow you to take a break to chat.
- Have seen people making boxes or calendars that have inspiring quotes to encourage them along.
For more information…a fellow blogger of mine Linda Thorlakson has written an amazing article about it.

If you have any creative ideas, leave a comment!
If you decide to join me, I wish you only the best!
I almost forgot to include my goofy self in my new t-shirt!
Good luck to you! I am a longtime NaNo participant, but this is the first time I’ve done the camps. I think I may even go nuts and set my WC higher than 50k, but not sure. I’ll add you to my NaNo buddy list.
