Light and Love be with you!

A Thought: College and Careers

After finishing High School, graduates are supposed to miraculously decide on which major to pursue. That’s a very difficult task to place on the shoulders of a “new-in-the-world-adult.”  I decided to explain how these decisions can be made.

Most of the population has no idea what they would like to do with their life. So, how can they decide which career feels right?

First, there are aids such as Personality Tests which can display a list of careers that may fit the students’ responses. This can also help in understanding there are more careers in the world then what the student originally considered.

In addition, there are many Career Assessment Tests and quizzes that can help the student navigate their journey. The job may sound amazing, but how do you know if it is the right path for you?

Luckily, most schools have added courses where students actually work instead of sitting in a classroom. Here they are able to learn hands-on skills, and understand business etiquette.

Students should attempt to begin the work-study class in High School. The student has the ability to leave school and go to work as their last class of the day. The important part here is to find a job in the career path the student wishes to explore.

*Side note* In college, these classes aren’t provided until the student is half-way or further through the degree chosen.

My advice to new college students is:

Take your General Education courses first. (This is the English, Math, History, Science courses you are used to)

Each semester throw in another course that is just for you, something that peaks your interest. (A course such as psychology or art history) See if you enjoy those classes and seek out more like them.

To get a degree of any kind you will have to add your main general education credits plus a good number of electives to the main courses.

Once you choose your major (or the career you want the most), you can choose a minor (the career you want second most). Remember, these are not set in stone. You may change them if you decide on a different path. You can also choose to have a Major in General Education until you decide what career best suits you.

College courses are not like High School classes. They are more extensive and require you to be the one in charge of your own actions. You have to be at school on time, and prepared to learn. Take your courses seriously, it’s not just school anymore… this is the beginning of your life.

College is not just about the future career you will have.

College is an intimate time for exploring yourself.

College is a time to learn who you are, what you like, and what you want.

Give yourself the motivation to become that person. You are your own cheerleader!

A little about me:

I was terrified of going to college. I had no idea what to expect, and what would be expected of me.

I wish I could tell you I have my life all figured out; I can’t. That would be a lie. I have a ton of ideas of what I want to do with this life, and I have many new ideas that join each day.

I enjoy college more than I ever thought I would. I love obtaining new knowledge, and I enjoy placing the information I receive into my daily life.

I have many different skills, ideas, and paths that I can follow. There are many doors that are open to me because of the courses I have taken, and the people I have met along the way.

College has helped me become the person I am today.

I became a Paramedic which was a path I had never thought about in High School. I was a Fire Fighter. I was a Restaurant Manager. I was a Retail Manager. My first job was at McDonald’s. More importantly, I became a Mother.

I want to teach American Sign Language (ASL). I want to become an Interpreter of ASL. I want to publish my novel, Sapphire Eyes. I want to give my son the life he deserves.

I may not be a movie star, or a CEO of some huge building in New York, but I am me.

I am proud of who I am, and who I will continue to become.
